How to Style Your Home with the Language of Flowers This Spring

I am here in my sunny corner of my family room studio, and I am squirming with anticipation for spring, the beginning of the bloom, and warmer days.

Although I love watching the white snow and I appreciate the moisture winter offers, I can’t help but miss the hot summer days of my childhood in Mexico. One of the first blooms to make its appearance in the spring is the royal-looking daffodil. It makes perfect sense that this little mystical flower represents new beginnings and rebirth.

The Star of the Month: The Daffodil (Narcissus)

Daffodils are among the most popular flowers around the world because they are like sunny little reminders that better days are ahead after a long, cold winter. Hence the symbolism of rebirth and new beginnings. They bloom in very early spring when the ground is still very cold. It is almost like a defiant manifesto to harsh weather—that they will bloom no matter what—and they do. I have seen them around Utah, looking like they own the place even after a late snowfall, with tiny sparks of ice on their crown-like centers shining in the sun.

I love watching the white and yellow daffodils bloom in my neighbor's garden through the kitchen window. They open the season, followed by red poppies that will soon give room to the roses to make their own starry appearance. Oh my gosh, I could talk about flowers forever!

The March Bouquet: A Composition of Meaning

This March, I created a composition of three flowers to share with the members of my Floriography Mail Club. I put a ton of thought into picking the flowers that go into the art I create every month because this is not just pretty artwork—it’s art that carries a special message. I want that to be as close to perfect as possible. I am not sharing the final message here because I don’t want to spoil the fun for the members, but I will share the beautiful flowers that come together for this composition:

  • Gerbera Daisy: For optimism and cheerfulness to welcome the sun.

  • Lotus: To represent deeper potential and the strength to rise (the "rebirth" that goes even deeper than a new start).

  • Daffodil: For new beginnings and first blooms.

Incorporating March Floriography into Your Life

Here are a couple of ideas on how to use floriography in modern-day decoration and lifestyle:

  • Home Styling: One way I love doing this is by displaying the birth flower of the month in a frame. I think this really brings new energy into the room. I rotate mine at the start of every month to keep the decor fresh and inviting all year.

  • Gift Idea: Gifting something daffodil-themed is a perfect way to surprise a friend or loved one who is starting something new—like a new job, moving house, or simply entering a new chapter in their life. It really shows you care and is a beautiful way to wish them the best on their new adventure.

I hope you have found this short post useful and inspiring. I am really enjoying my immersion in the language of flowers this year, and I can’t wait to share all of my findings with you.

What "new beginning" are you celebrating this March?
